Here’s how technology and accessibility go hand in hand

Technology has the potential to make learning more accessible for students. Technologies such as augmented and virtual reality can make learning more engaging and interactive, and even add gaming elements to textbook material. Technologies like screen readers and cameras can help students with disabilities to access and enjoy courses with less stress and hassle. 

 

Screen Readers

Screen readers are software programs that read aloud the text on a computer screen. They can be very helpful for students who are blind or have low vision, as they allow them to access digital content that might otherwise be inaccessible. Screen readers can also help students who have difficulty reading or processing written text, such as those with dyslexia or other learning disabilities. 

 

Cameras 

Cameras can be used in a variety of ways to support students:

Document cameras can be used to project text or other materials onto a larger screen, making it easier for students with low vision to see. They can also be used to display student work or demonstrate a process or procedure.

Webcams can be used to facilitate remote learning, allowing students who struggle with social anxiety to participate in classes or meetings from home. They can also be used for virtual field trips or other experiential learning opportunities.

Assistive technology such as eye-gaze tracking systems can use cameras to track a student’s eye movements and allow them to control a computer or other device with their gaze. This can be helpful for students with physical disabilities that make it difficult or impossible to use a keyboard or mouse.

 

Accessible learning for all

In developing countries, where access to education can be limited, technology has made it possible for educational resources to reach students who previously had little to no access to education. 

 

Therefore, technology can help break down barriers and make learning more accessible for students in more ways than one. Learners who struggle with the traditional education system and require additional support can receive this through technology, and learners who have been cut off from education in the past can now access it.
